Google To Phase Out IE6 Support
According to a notice we’ve just received from Google, the search engine giant has decided to phase out support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 from the 1st of March 2010.
They explained that, in an ongoing process of harnessing the latest improvements in browser technology, including faster JavaScript, and standards like HTML5, support and functionality for IE6, as well as other older browsers that are no longer supported by their manufacturers, will be phased out over the course of the year.
Google Docs First Affected
After the 1st of March 2010, Google explained that certain features of the Google Docs suite, and the Google Sites editor, may experience high latency, or not work correctly, in older browsers.
Later in the year, support for older browsers in Google Mail and Google Calendar will begin to be phased out, and anybody using them with older browsers is advised to update their browser as soon as possible, to ensure all functions continue working as intended.
Still Supported
Google concluded by saying that Google Apps will continue to support the following browsers:
- Internet Explorer 7.0 and above.
- Firefox 3.0 and above.
- Google Chrome 4.0 and above.
- Safari 3.0 and above.
If you make use of any Google Apps, you’ll start seeing a message from this week on, alerting you to the change, and the need to upgrade your browser.
